Els embrions, concebuts i desenvolupats al laboratori, són traslladats a la sala de Predestinació Social, on s'ajusten les aptituds i la intel·ligència de cadascú segons la casta que li ha estat assignada. Quatre joves, víctimes i herois d'aquesta novel·la, no encaixaran en un règim planificador i totalitari que pretén transformar els humans en meres cèl·lules d'un cos social.
